Triston McKenzie’s strong midseason stretch has Guardians hopeful for a breakout 2022: 40-man roster review


CLEVELAND, Ohio — Triston McKenzie’s 2021 season can be broken down into a three-act play with both notable and forgettable performances by the lead actor.

The 24-year-old righty was as cold as an early April afternoon at Progressive Field in his first 11 appearances, piling up walks and struggling to get through innings and work deep into games.

After a couple of stints at Triple-A Columbus, McKenzie returned in July and authored a stretch of 11 more starts that were simply breathtaking. He limited traffic on the bases, worked at least six frames in all but one of the outings and dominated opposing hitters to the tune of a .160 batting average and a sterling 9.13 strikeouts per nine innings.
