On the first Saturday of 2021, Casey Thompson helped out at a football camp with his dad, former OU quarterback Charles Thompson.
Casey Thompson, a Texas Longhorn QB coming off a spectacular performance in the Alamo Bowl a few days previous, spoke to the young campers. When he finished, Thompson heard the news.
Tom Herman was out as the Longhorn coach. Steve Sarkisian was in.
Thompson never saw it coming. But he knew where it was going. Thompson was about to enter a quarterback derby, conducted by one of college football’s brightest offensive minds.
“My first reaction is, how can I get ahold of him?” Thompson said last weekend during a UT Zoom conference.
Thompson, who played high school football at Southmoore and Newcastle, texted athletic director Texas Chris Del Conte to get Sarkisian’s phone number. Thompson called his new coach that very day.
