Terry McKaig leaves UBC baseball, takes fundraising role with B.C. Cancer Foundation

Terry McKaig’s first negotiations for the University of B.C. Thunderbirds included trying to track down field time.

McKaig, the T-Birds’ longtime head coach, spearheaded resurrecting the baseball program at the school in 1998. There wasn’t anywhere automatically for them to be based out of, so their home games early on bounced from Burnaby to Abbotsford to Ladner, to where ever else McKaig could worm his way in.

McKaig’s last talks for the T-Birds included discussions that were much more elaborate. He was in charge of their fundraising, and he found the donors who bankrolled the majority of a$4 million indoor practice facilityand the $6 million ballpark that sits next door on the school’s Point Grey campus. They even have naming sponsors: the UBC Baseball Rose Indoor Training Centre and Tourmaline West Stadium.
