SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Baseball on a spring Sunday: the crack of the bat, the infield chatter, the buzz of the crowd – things seemed almost normal at Scottsdale Stadium during the Giants’ Cactus League opener.

Even that beacon of Giants stability was back in action. Buster Posey was behind the plate after sitting out the shortened 2020 season and he got a big hand from the limited attendance on hand during his first at-bat. “You’re back! You’re back!” one fan yelled, demonstrating Posey’s later observation that with a smaller bunch of fans, it’s easy to hear individual voices.

“That just shows the kind of guy he is, the staple that he’s been for this franchise and appreciation that the fans have for him and the appreciation he has back for the fans,” new Giants outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. said. “It’s always great to see when fans appreciate the talent in a human being like that.”
