Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is a “prime candidate” for the Houston Texans’ head coaching job.
On Tuesday, Frazier had his second interview for the last head coaching vacancy on the market. If he ends up getting the job, Buffalo will have to find a replacement for the coordinator that has been with the Bills since 2017. Frazier would, however, leave the team with a nice parting gift in the form of third round picks in the 2021 and 2022 NFL draft.
Why would Buffalo receive two third round picks for losing Frazier?
The NFL’s new compensatory pick rule that rewards teams with draft picks for helping to develop minority coaches and executives.
The employer-club of a minority employee who has been hired by another club as its Head Coach or Primary Football Executive (General Manager) shall receive Draft choice compensation in the form of a compensatory Draft pick in the third round in each of the next two Drafts for an employee hired as either a Head Coach or Primary Football Executive, or for the next three Drafts if it has two employees hired for both positions. The reference to the hiring of employees into “both positions” could be by the same club or different clubs.
