49ers’ Trent Williams misses second straight practice with sprained ankle

Trent Williams has a sprained ankle is day-to-day the 49ers said Thursday after the Pro Bowl left tackle missed his second straight practice.

It’s not clear when Williams, 33, was injured. He participated in practice Monday and spoke with reporters afterwards, walking into the auditorium at Levi’s Stadium without a noticeable limp. He missed his first practice Wednesday following an off day.

If Williams can’t play Sunday against the Colts, the 49ers will turn to rookie Jaylon Smith, a fifth-round pick from Western Michigan. Moore’s only offensive action this season came when he played 22 snaps in the second half of a loss to the Seahawks on Oct. 3 when Williams was sidelined with a shoulder injury. Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel noted Thursday the 49ers didn’t provide the rookie with any blocking assistance when he entered and he graded out well in his fill-in stint.
